چکیده

1. By taking advantage of the low metabolic rate of the alligator, it was possible to study the effect of insulin on the rate at which each of a large group of amino acids was utilized in vivo. 2. 'Amino acid tolerances' of both isomers of amino acids were determined in the alligator and in the rat by the injection of 10 m-moles/kg. followed by analyses of plasma amino acids at frequent intervals. The rat metabolized amino acids from 50 to 100 times as fast as the alligator. In general, the non-essential amino acids were utilized much more rapidly than the essential ones by both species. 3. Each amino acid had its characteristic tolerance curve. 4. In the alligator, insulin increased the rate of metabolism of most of the exogenous amino acids of both isomers. 5. Insulin appears to enhance the metabolism of compounds which differ greatly in chemical structure.

The Hyaluronic Acid of Synovial Fluid in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis *is considered a disease which involves the connective tissue and supporting structures of the body with its primary nidus in the interfibrillar ground substance of these structures (1). The ground substances are thought to be composed of mucopolysaccharide-protein complexes. The nature of two of the polysaccharides is known-chondroitin sulfuric acid and hyaluronic acid. Th...

Interaction between hyaluronic acid and serum dispersed in collagen gels.

A high degree of viscosity is the most striking physical attribute of normal synovial fluid. Although its direct relationship to the lubrication of joints remains uncertain, this viscosity still reflects physiologically important properties of hyaluronic acid. The anomalous viscosity which is a particular feature of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid depends not only on the concentration and pol...

Anomalous Behavior of Hyaluronan Crosslinking Due to the Presence of Excess Phospholipids in the Articular Cartilage System of Osteoarthritis

Lubrication of articular cartilage is a complex multiscale phenomenon in synovial joint organ systems. In these systems, synovial fluid properties result from synergistic interactions between a variety of molecular constituent. Two molecular classes in particular are of importance in understanding lubrication mechanisms: hyaluronic acid and phospholipids. The purpose of this study is to evaluat...

Mucin clots from microgram amounts of hyaluronic acid.

The appearances and nature of mucin complexes have been studied intensively with synovial fluid and similar concentrations of hyaluronic acid, but there is a paucity of information about mucin complexes precipitated from very dilute hyaluronic acid (for example, 2 to 20 Ktg./ml.), which can probably be attributed to the rarity of natural solutions of this order except in bacterial and cellcultu...

2. An empirical correction for the effect of albumin on the sedimentation of hyaluronic acid is obtained, and applied to the results obtained for human synovial fluids. 3. The effect of albumin on the sedimentation of hyaluronic acid, when the latter is the slower component, is shown to be consistent with the 'McFarlane' (1935a, b) boundary anomaly. 4. The effect of albumin on the sedimentation...

Electrophoresis studies of human synovial mucin.

A characteristic property of synovial fluids is the formation of a mucin clot when a weak acid is added. The physical character of the clot may be of some aid in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (Ropes, Bennett, Cobb, Jacox & Jesser, 1957; Ropes & Bauer, 1953). The clot has also been used as a preliminary step in the isolation of hyaluronic acid (Meyer, Smyth & Dawson, 1939) and its hexosa...
